The Kinabalu peak should be right there, and I am not joking. But it was so misty, and a rather cold day at this mountain.
Kinabalu means Ancestors' Mountain in Kadazandusun language. At 4095 meter above sea level, Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Borneo.
I drove a rented car from Kota Kinabalu (KK) and since I was not planning to stay overnight, and in fact I was driving up to Kundasang, I had to do a return journey of 200km. I didn't know it was that far........maybe just an excuse.
By the way, the Proton SAGA I drove was booked in advance through this webpage:
The road between Kota Kinabalu and Gunung Kinabalu is a combinations of
flat and mountainous roads, straight and zig zagging. But the view
throughout the journey is breathtaking.
Our first stop is Kinabalu park.
Kinabalu park has a vast area, there is information centre, souvenir shops, few viewing spots, and most importantly the gateway to the climb.
The whole park is designated as UNESCO World Heritage site. There has been an International Climbathon to the peak every year where the winner is chosen from the fastest climber. Can you imagine climbing the mountain in 2 and a half hours? Were they running? They must have been.
The best spot to see the peak is at Timpohon View. So we tried our best to check on the peak, but still we couldn't see it. Where is it? Slightly can see but not so clear, fully covered by cloud.
The gateway to the top. |
So we still try to check the Kinabalu peak. Still not so clear. It was a cold day at the Kinabalu, and we enjoyed the view, the smell, the cold, the abundant of green, the forest and mostly the mountain. Till next time.
